Thesis Title: Toward a Pedagogy of Critical Youth Media

Diana Coryat is a communications scholar, media educator, and consultant to nonprofit organizations. See website for more information http://newenglandnonprofitconsulting.com/
She has worked in youth and community media for the past two decades. She is the co-founder and former executive director of Global Action Project (G.A.P.), a youth media organization based in New York City that works with young people most affected by injustice to build community power, cultural expression, and political change (www.global-action.org). Founded in 1991, G.A.P. has facilitated the production of over 130 videos by immigrant, refugee, LGBTQ, youth of color and working class youth. During the past several years, she has worked with youth media collectives in Colombia, Cuba and Venezuela. As a Fulbright Scholar in 2007, Diana taught a course on “Youth, Media and Social Movements” at the renowned School of Social Communication at La Universidad del Valle in Cali, Colombia, and engaged in exchanges with numerous universities and community media groups throughout Colombia. She has facilitated workshops, seminars, artist exchanges and screenings at universities, community organizations and festivals in the U.S. and internationally in Brazil, Colombia, Croatia, Cuba, Guatemala, Japan, Northern Ireland, Peru, Puerto Rico and Venezuela. Prior to starting G.A.P., Diana was an independent documentary filmmaker and produced commercials for television. She holds a BFA from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, and an MA in Communication from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She is currently working on her doctoral degree at UMass Amherst in the Dept. of Communication.
